Secondary school is an integral part of each and every student’s life. Having a secondary education is the first step towards pursuing their dream of a successful career. In this blog post, we’ll discuss secondary school in Kuala Lumpur with a comprehensive guide.

Kuala Lumpur (KL), the capital and bustling city of Malaysia, is known for its excellent education system and an above-average literacy rate. Secondary schools in KL provide global exposure to its students and contribute positively to their development as an individual and in their career choices.

Thus, it is essential for every child to attend a Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur.

    What is a Secondary School?

A Secondary school refers to the schooling that is offered after primary school, and before higher, optional education. Most countries in Asia offer part of secondary school as optional schooling in preparation for higher education.

    Importance of Secondary Schools

Secondary school education is important for children as it introduces them to specific and more advanced subjects that lay a strong academic foundation for when they complete school. In addition, it gives students the opportunity to further develop their communication and social skills.

GIIS, the best International School in Malaysia, can be one of the best places for laying a strong foundation, creating long-lasting friendships and finding peers having similar interests.

Age Group required for Secondary Education

In the secondary schools of Malaysia, children generally enter secondary school at the age of 13. Secondary school education is mandatory for all Malaysian children. Generally, children study in secondary school for five years. The two levels of secondary education in Malaysia are Lower Secondary- Form 1 to 3 and Upper Secondary- Form 4 to 5.

Children of age 15 will sit for the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) at the end of Form 3. Teenagers are also supposed to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) at the end of Form 5. The national secondary leaving qualification plays a significant role in determining the pre-university and higher education pathways for students.

If students wish, they can enter the 6th Form at selected schools to sit for the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), which is equivalent to the A Level in terms of pre-university qualifications.

    Secondary School Curriculum

In the schools of Malaysia, secondary students take core mandatory subjects such as Bahasa Melayu, Science, English, History, Geography, and Mathematics at the lower secondary level. After attempting the PT3 examination, students can choose to enter Science, Arts, and Vocational streams.

    Types of Secondary Schools

Education in the Secondary Schools in Kuala Lumpur is a continuation of primary education. It consists of lower secondary (Form 1 – 3) and upper secondary (Form 4 and 5). Generally, education in secondary school in many English-speaking countries is equivalent to high school education in the United States.

Grades 9 to 12 in American high schools are considered a part of secondary school. In British schools, children aged 12 to 16 may enroll in lower secondary. They then progress to upper secondary from the age of 16 to 18 in preparation for university.

The Government-funded national schools and various Chinese vernacular schools with Mandarin as media of instruction offer the Malaysian Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM) curriculum.

There are also numerous private schools in Kuala Lumpur offering a national curriculum that have more facilities and smaller class sizes. In addition, Malaysia has over 100 international schools that offer international curricula and globally-recognized qualifications.

How do you apply for Secondary School in Malaysia?

Parents who are interested in enrolling their children in a top International School in Malaysia can contact the school directly for application purposes. Generally, the international school application process involves payment of registration fees and assessment tests.

If the child meets all the requirements, parents would be required to pay the admission fees and a deposit for successful enrolment in the school.

What are the fees for Secondary Schools?

The fees for secondary schools vary greatly depending upon whether the school is privately owned or is a government school. Therefore, it is important for parents to find a school that is within their budget. Government schools are generally free, the parents only have to pay for the books, uniforms, and administration fees.

For international schools, the term fee can run from a couple of thousand ringgit to almost five digits, on top of the admission fees.

How to choose the right Secondary International School in Malaysia?

There are various factors that parents can consider when choosing the right secondary school for their children. Parents are encouraged to do their research well in advance and take into consideration the needs of themselves as well as of their children.

Important factors to investigate are the curriculum offered, credentials of teachers, teaching and disciplinary methods, safety, and fees, among others.

    To conclude

once parents have selected the right secondary school for their child, they must prepare them for the school experience. This includes helping them adjust to the daily routine of attending school and talking to them about any concerns or worries.

In addition, parents should also talk to their children about what happens in the school– what goes on, what activities they will get to indulge in and how they will make lots of friends.
